Welcome to the Official Trezor Getting Started Guide
Trezor® is a leading hardware wallet developed by SatoshiLabs, designed to offer robust protection for your cryptocurrencies. Whether you’re a first-time user or a crypto veteran, this official guide walks you through every step of setting up your Trezor device at Trezor.io/Start.
In this guide, you'll learn how to initialize your device, secure your recovery seed, install firmware, manage wallets using Trezor Suite, and follow essential crypto security practices.
1. Unboxing and Hardware Check
Every Trezor device comes sealed and tamper-evident. Before starting:
- Verify the holographic seal is intact.
- Ensure you received all items: Trezor device, USB cable, recovery seed cards, user guide, stickers.
- Do not use the device if packaging appears altered.
2. Connect to Trezor.io/Start
Go to https://trezor.io/start on your browser. Choose your device model — either Trezor Model One or Trezor Model T.
From here, you will be directed to download Trezor Suite — a secure desktop app for managing your wallet.
- Download Trezor Suite for your operating system (Windows, Mac, Linux).
- Install the app and launch it.
- Plug your Trezor into your computer using the USB cable.
3. Firmware Installation
When using your Trezor device for the first time, you’ll be prompted to install firmware. This ensures your device is secure and updated with the latest features.
- Only install firmware via Trezor Suite.
- Do not disconnect the device during the process.
- Once installed, you’ll proceed to wallet creation.
4. Create a New Wallet
After the firmware is installed, Trezor Suite will ask whether to create a new wallet or recover an existing one. To create a new wallet:
- Select “Create New Wallet”.
- Follow on-screen instructions to generate your recovery seed.
- Write down your 12 or 24-word recovery seed on the provided seed card.
5. Backup and Secure Your Recovery Seed
Your recovery seed is your only backup. If your Trezor is lost or destroyed, the seed allows you to restore all assets.
Best Practices for Seed Storage:
- Store in a fireproof/waterproof safe.
- Consider using a steel backup (e.g., Cryptosteel).
- Never share it online or with anyone you don't trust 100%.
6. Setting Up a PIN and Passphrase
Trezor allows you to secure your device with a PIN, which must be entered every time you connect your wallet.
PIN Setup:
- Choose a strong PIN (6+ digits).
- Repeated incorrect entries will wipe the device.
- If wiped, use your recovery seed to restore your wallet.
Passphrase (Advanced):
An optional passphrase adds another layer of security. It's an extra word added to your seed, creating a hidden wallet.
7. Receiving and Sending Crypto
Now your wallet is set up! You can receive coins and tokens by selecting an asset in Trezor Suite and generating a new receiving address.
Always verify:
- Recipient addresses on your Trezor screen before confirming.
- That you're sending to the correct network (e.g., ETH vs. BSC).
- Fees and transaction speed preferences.
8. Trezor Suite Features
Trezor Suite is your command center for managing your digital assets:
- Buy, exchange, and stake crypto via third-party integrations
- Track portfolio balance
- Label addresses and transactions
- Manage multiple accounts and coins (BTC, ETH, ADA, ERC-20, and more)
